Learn about DNA in this hands-on series with Sara Phelps on Zoom!
This event is recommended for grades 3-10, but all are welcome to attend.
Recommended supplies for Part 1 (making a candy DNA model):
- 2 Twizzlers (or other rope type candy)
- 5 toothpicks
- Small candies such as gummy bears or marshmallows that come in 4 different colors (10 of each color)
- Paper and pen/pencil
Recommended supplies for Part 2 (extracting DNA from strawberries):
- Strawberries
- Warm water
- Salt
- Dish soap
- Rubbing alcohol
- Paper towel, coffee filter, or cheese cloth
- Cup or glass jar
- Plastic bag to squish strawberry
- Toothpick or skewer
