๐Ÿ’ก 1 THOUGHT

ITโ€™S OKAY TO LET YOUR KIDS SEE YOU REST

Permission granted: Your kids need to see you rest.

Follow Claireโ€™s Substack for more tips on home-based learning and listen to our podcast with her on the neuroscience of teaching young kids.

๐Ÿ“Š 2 TRENDS

1. HOW TO GET KIDS THINKING INSTEAD OF MIMICKING IN MATH CLASS (KQED) - The "thinking classrooms" model flips traditional math teaching on its head. Instead of rows of desks and worksheets, students work in groups of three at whiteboards, with new partners every day chosen by playing cards. Sixth graders who used to watch the clock now say "that was two periods already?" The key: when kids can't predict their group or role, they stop playing passive and start actually thinking.

2. TWIN STUDIES: NATURE VS. NURTURE REVISITED (@jonatanpallesen) - Research comparing identical twins raised apart shows genetics play a larger role in outcomes than previously thought. While this doesn't mean parenting is meaningless, it does suggest that agonizing over every decisionโ€”organic vs. conventional, screen time limits, extracurricular choicesโ€”might matter less than we think. Maybe good-enough parenting is actually... good enough.

๐Ÿ”จ 3 TOOLS

1. ASSIGNMENT SHEETS FOR INDEPENDENT KIDS (A Humble Place) - Free printables that list weekly tasks with checkboxes. Kids decide when to complete each assignment. The author reports her own children went from constant questions to managing their own schedules.

2. GEOGEBRA: VISUAL MATH - Free tools that turn algebra into pictures and geometry into animations. Works in any browser. 100 million users worldwide.

3. HOFFMAN ACADEMY: FREE PIANO LESSONS - 350+ YouTube lessons created by a teacher who spent 20 years figuring out why traditional lessons fail. Start with lesson one, no experience needed.
